Pashinyan and Pezeshkian Discuss Armenia–Azerbaijan Agreement

According to Azerbaijan’s Trend News Agency, quoting the Armenian Prime Minister’s Office, Nikol Pashinyan, during today’s (Monday) phone call, informed the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, of the results of the Friday meeting at the White House.

In this conversation, the Armenian Prime Minister “emphasized the opportunities that the peace established between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan creates for the region.”

Pashinyan further stressed that “regional communication channels will operate within the framework of the principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty, and jurisdiction of the respective countries, and on the basis of reciprocity.”

According to Yerevan’s statement, Pashinyan expressed gratitude to Pezeshkian for his impartial assessment of the agreements and underlined the importance of his upcoming visit to Armenia.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, in response to a question today about the statement between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia that was initialed in Washington — and the transit route (the so-called ‘Trump Route’) that is to be established — stated, “The South Caucasus region holds very high value for Iran in geopolitical, political, economic, and neighborly relations terms, and it is only natural that we are involved in processes that may in any way shape or affect developments there.”

He added, “We have been in close contact with both the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia, and the visit of the Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister to Tehran tomorrow is in this context.”

According to Baghaei, the Armenian Foreign Minister yesterday emphasized that Armenia will refrain from any action that could be in any way inconsistent with or cause concern for Iran.

The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran also stated, “We have made it clear that we will by no means accept a border closure with Armenia.”
