Rob Reiner and Wife Michele Killed; Son Nick Reiner Charged With First-Degree Murder + Video
Rokna Social Desk: Nick Reiner, the son of renowned Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele, has been charged with murder in connection with the deaths of his parents, Los Angeles prosecutors announced.
According to Rokna, citing BBC, district Attorney Nathan Hochman said Nick Reiner is facing two counts of first-degree murder, along with a special circumstance allegation involving multiple victims.
If convicted, Reiner could face a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. Hochman said he will be brought before a court to formally hear the charges and enter a plea once he is medically cleared by prison authorities.
The charges were filed two days after Rob and Michele Reiner were discovered dead in their Brentwood, California home, each suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Prosecutors also included a special allegation stating that a knife was used in the killings.
Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, Hochman said no final determination has been made on whether the prosecution will pursue the death penalty.
The suspect, who is 32 years old, was additionally accused of using a dangerous and deadly weapon, identified as a knife.
He had initially been expected to appear in court later Tuesday for an arraignment hearing, during which the charges would be formally presented. The district attorney later said the hearing would take place at a later date.
Rob Reiner was a celebrated filmmaker who directed a number of iconic movies across different genres, including This Is Spinal Tap, Misery and A Few Good Men.
Michele Singer Reiner was an actress, photographer and producer, and the founder of Reiner Light, a photography agency and production company.
Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell described the case as deeply tragic, saying it was “heartbreaking and deeply personal, not only for the Reiner family and their loved ones, but for the entire city.”
“We extend our deepest condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy,” he said.
When asked whether the murder weapon had been recovered, Hochman said that information would be disclosed in court.
Authorities said autopsies are still pending and will determine the exact cause, manner and time of death.
