Financial Times: Trump Warns Zelensky That Accepting Russia’s Terms Is His Only Way to Survive

According to Iran’s Rokna, citing the British newspaper Financial Times, Trump told Zelensky during their meeting at the White House on Friday that he should accept Russia’s terms for ending the conflict, as Putin had threatened to destroy Ukraine if Kyiv refused to comply.

Citing informed sources, the report said Trump insisted during the meeting that Zelensky surrender the entire Donbas region in eastern Ukraine to Russia. The U.S. president repeatedly referred to his recent phone conversation with Putin throughout the discussion.

According to Financial Times, Ukraine eventually managed to persuade Trump once again to support a ceasefire along the current front lines.

Following the meeting with Zelensky, Trump stated that Ukraine and Russia should halt hostilities along their existing lines of engagement. Zelensky also noted that this was an important point.

Zelensky visited the White House on Friday to request additional arms from the United States. A day earlier, Trump and Putin had held a phone conversation.

As reported by Financial Times, during that call, Putin proposed returning a few small areas in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions currently under Russian control to Ukraine, in exchange for the transfer of larger territories in the Donbas region, which remain under Kyiv’s control, to Moscow.

Trump and Putin also agreed during the phone conversation to meet in two weeks in Budapest, the Hungarian capital. The two leaders had previously met in the U.S. state of Alaska.
