U.S. Nuclear Bombs Return to the UK After 17 Years + Photos

For the first time since 2008, the United States has dispatched several nuclear bombs to the United Kingdom.

The United States has deployed multiple nuclear weapons to the UK for the first time since 2008.

As reported in the British defense journal, the U.S. has stationed its nuclear weapons in the UK after a 17-year hiatus. According to reports, several B61-12 thermonuclear bombs have been transferred to RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, a Royal Air Force base utilized by the United States Air Force.

Experts say these weapons were likely transferred from Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico, where the U.S. Air Force’s nuclear weapons center is located, and placed in a newly built secure storage facility in the UK.

Previously, U.S. nuclear weapons were stationed at RAF Lakenheath during the Cold War, but in 2008, as part of a broader disarmament initiative across Europe, they were withdrawn from the site.

The report emphasizes that this move signifies a “significant shift” in NATO’s nuclear posture in Europe, reflecting the deterioration of relations with Russia and a renewed focus on what is being termed “deterrence.”
