48 Sukhoi and MiG Fighter Jets Land in Iran / Comparison of the Advantages of These Russian Aircraft with American Fighters
Rokna Political Desk: The arrival of four squadrons of Sukhoi-27 and MiG-29 fighter jets in Iran, aimed at equipping the Air Force and strengthening the country’s military capability, is underway as the logistical process is being completed.
According to Rokna, Iran has succeeded in adding MIG-29SMT fighter jets to its military fleet and has also taken delivery of a number of used SU-27 fighter aircraft from Russia. These fighters have now entered the country, but the process of becoming operational and achieving combat readiness has not yet been completed. Logistical and support arrangements for maintaining this equipment are currently underway.
According to available information, the SU-27 fighter jets have been placed at Iran’s disposal by the Russian Army on a temporary basis until the completion of contracts related to the delivery of more advanced aircraft such as the Sukhoi-35 and Sukhoi-57. This decision has been made to increase the operational capability of the country’s Air Force, particularly in short-term military missions. It is also planned that these fighters will be stationed in rapid-alert conditions at specific points across the country and will carry out their duties from high altitudes.
With the arrival of the MiG and Sukhoi fighters, these assets have been organized into four separate squadrons, each consisting of 12 aircraft. Accordingly, a total of 48 operational fighter jets have been added to Iran’s Air Force.
Sukhoi-27; A Reminder of Cold War Rivalry
The arrival of Sukhoi-27 fighter jets in Iran has once again highlighted the name of this model in military circles. This fighter, known in NATO terminology as the Flanker, symbolizes the rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The aircraft was designed in response to the American F-15 Eagle fighter, with the primary objective of achieving air superiority. Among the prominent features of the Sukhoi-27 are its large airframe, powerful engines, and extended wings, which enable broad and precise performance in various missions.
Review of the Superior Features of the Sukhoi-27
The Saturn/Lyulka AL-31F turbofan engines, which form the backbone of this fighter, are considered one of the key capabilities of the Sukhoi-27. This feature has enabled it to compete with advanced American fighters such as the F-14 and F-15. Due to its long operational range, extensive weapons-carrying capability, and exceptional maneuverability, the Sukhoi-27 is categorized as an air superiority fighter. The aircraft also demonstrates suitable performance in other missions such as ground attacks or support operations.
This advanced aircraft is equipped with modern technologies such as the Infrared Search and Track (IRST) system, installed at the front of the fuselage and coordinated with a laser receiver. This technology provides the fighter with the capability to conduct covert attacks and track enemies even without the need to use radar.
Comparison Between the Sukhoi-27 and the F-15
The American F-15 fighter was designed based on a long-range engagement strategy and can identify and target objectives before entering the battlefield. In contrast, the Sukhoi-27 was designed as a fighter with excellent maneuvering power for close combat. The difference between these two aircraft is evident not only in technology but also in operational strategies, with the Sukhoi-27 being ideal for rapid and close confrontation.
Details on the Upgraded MiG-29s
According to a report by the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, Iran has received four squadrons of upgraded MiG-29 fighters from Russia. This report is consistent with previous news regarding the reinforcement of Iran’s MiG-29 fleet and indicates new developments in the aviation domain.
The new MiG-29 models, including the M and SM versions, are equipped with advanced radars, improved refueling systems, and multirole capabilities. The combination of these fighters with Sukhoi-24 aircraft equipped with modern systems provides Iran’s Air Force with the ability to carry out diverse missions such as long-range strikes and interception operations.
