U.S. Imposes Visa Restrictions on 18 Iranian Officials and Their Families

Tommy Piggott, Deputy Spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, stated on Wednesday local time, reiterating White House positions, that the new visa restrictions target individuals involved in limiting the freedom of expression of the Iranian people.

According to IRNA, the U.S. State Department spokesperson, repeating Washington’s interventionist stance, said that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, acting under his authority pursuant to Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, is taking measures to impose visa restrictions on 18 Iranian government officials, telecommunications industry leaders, and their immediate family members.

The Deputy Spokesperson emphasized, “So far, 58 individuals have been targeted under this policy.”

On February 4, 2025 (16 Bahman 1403), the U.S. President signed a memorandum to continue the maximum pressure policy against the Islamic Republic of Iran, claiming readiness to engage in dialogue with Iran. Despite five rounds of indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States and claims of a diplomatic approach toward Tehran, on June 12, the U.S. gave Israel the green light to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities and also participated in the attacks.

Following the 12-day conflict, indirect Tehran–Washington negotiations have resumed.

The second round of nuclear talks between Iran and the United States took place on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 (28 Bahman 1404), in Geneva, Switzerland, and concluded after approximately three hours and 30 minutes of intensive diplomatic consultations.

Like previous rounds, these talks were held indirectly with the mediation of the Sultanate of Oman. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi headed the Iranian delegation, while Steve Witkoff, Special Representative, and Jared Kushner, the U.S. President’s son-in-law, led the American delegation.

The first round of indirect Tehran–Washington talks was held on Friday, February 6, 2026 (17 Bahman 1404), in Muscat. During the discussions, the Iranian and U.S. negotiating teams exchanged a set of views, considerations, and approaches through Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi.
