According to Rokna, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday evening that U.S. President Donald Trump has not yet issued a formal order to send a second aircraft carrier to the West Asia region.
The newspaper wrote that the Pentagon has instructed the aircraft carrier strike group USS George H.W. Bush to prepare for a possible deployment to West Asia.
Citing U.S. officials, the publication reported that the order could be issued within the next few hours and that the Pentagon is preparing another aircraft carrier for deployment to the region within two weeks.
The Wall Street Journal, noting that details regarding the second round of negotiations with Iran have not yet been finalized, added: “The aircraft carrier that the Pentagon may deploy will depart from the East Coast of the United States.”
About the USS George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group
The aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush, the final generation of Nimitz-class carriers and named in honor of the forty-first President of the United States, serves as the backbone of the U.S. Navy in global missions with a combination of fighter jets, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles.
The USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77), named after the forty-first President of the United States, is considered part of the final generation of Nimitz-class aircraft carriers — a class that has formed the core of the U.S. carrier fleet in recent decades.
Naming and General Specifications
According to naval.fandom, the USS George H.W. Bush was named in honor of George Herbert Walker Bush, former U.S. President and former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The ship’s operational nickname, “Avenger,” was chosen in reference to the TBM Avenger aircraft that Bush flew as a U.S. Navy pilot during World War II.
The USS George H.W. Bush was formally commissioned into the U.S. Navy on January 10, 2009. Subsequently, builder’s sea trials were conducted in February, followed by Navy acceptance trials in April 2009 to fully evaluate the ship’s systems.
Operational Missions
In 2011, the USS George H.W. Bush began its first operational deployment as part of Carrier Strike Group 2. In the years that followed, the carrier participated in various missions and operations in Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Middle East.
Military Assets Aboard the George H.W. Bush
A full Carrier Air Wing (Carrier Air Wing 7) is typically deployed aboard the USS George H.W. Bush, comprising several types of aircraft and helicopters with different operational roles. This contingent generally includes the following:
F/A-18E/F Super Hornet multirole fighters for strike missions, air defense, and maritime attack operations.
EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft for suppression of enemy air defenses and electronic warfare missions.
E-2D Hawkeye airborne early warning aircraft responsible for command and control and early warning operations.
MH-60S and MH-60R Seahawk helicopters for naval combat, search and rescue, anti-submarine warfare, and other support missions.
During certain periods, logistics and support helicopters are also embarked, and depending on the mission, the number of aircraft and helicopters may vary. Additionally, part of the installed equipment includes a control center for MQ-25 Stingray unmanned aerial vehicles, designed for aerial refueling operations.
This composition enables the carrier to conduct offensive operations, air defense, reconnaissance, and maritime support missions, undertaking diverse responsibilities in operational deployments.
