Will Maduro Be Pardoned?
Rokna Political Desk: The Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council said that the detained president of Venezuela will likely be granted a pardon—if not by Donald Trump, then by the next president of the United States.
According to Rokna, Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, wrote in an editorial published on the website of RIA Novosti that the position of the United States in pursuing politically motivated charges against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is not legitimate from the perspective of a number of fundamental norms of international law.
He went on to point out examples of Washington’s actions that violate legal norms concerning the absolute immunity of a head of state, the principle of territorial integrity, and human rights.
Medvedev added: “Of course, the White House may ignore all norms related to judicial procedures as well as the principles of public international law under the pretext of its so-called ‘national interests,’ as it has repeatedly done throughout U.S. history.”
The senior Russian official believes that, in such a case, Maduro would be subjected to politically motivated criminal prosecution as a warning to all countries that oppose the so-called “Donroe Doctrine,” with an outcome that would be almost predetermined.
He wrote: However, as I have previously noted on social media, he will most likely also be granted a pardon—if not by Trump himself, then at least by the next president of the United States.
On January 3, acting on the order of U.S. President Donald Trump, the United States carried out a large-scale attack on Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, during which Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were arrested on the pretext of involvement in “narco-terrorism” and transferred to New York.
