Manhunt Underway After Deadly Shooting at Brown University Leaves 2 Students Dead, 9 Injured + Video
Rokna Political Desk: A large-scale manhunt is underway after a gunman opened fire during a final exam review session at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, killing at least two students and injuring nine others.
According to Rokna, citing CNN, the suspect, described as a man in his 30s wearing dark clothing, remains at large. Authorities have issued a shelter-in-place order for residents in and around the campus. More than 400 law enforcement officers from local, state, and federal agencies are involved in the search, with the FBI and Providence police urging the public to provide any relevant information. President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident.
The shooting occurred Saturday afternoon inside the Barus and Holley building, which houses classrooms and laboratories for the engineering and physics departments. The attack began during a Principles of Economics final exam review session.
Students across campus received emergency alerts warning of an active shooter. Lydell Dyer, a Brown University student working at the campus gym, said official updates were limited, forcing students to rely on one another for information. Several buildings were placed under lockdown as police cleared classrooms and escorted individuals to safe locations.
Surveillance footage released by police shows a man believed to be the suspect leaving the building and walking along Hope Street. His face is not visible, and witnesses said he may have been wearing a gray camouflage mask.
Nine victims were transported to Rhode Island Hospital with gunshot-related injuries. Hospital officials said several patients remain in critical condition. Most of the victims were students, including the two who were killed. An additional individual sustained minor injuries and is expected to recover fully.
Brown University President Christina Paxson said the university’s immediate focus is on supporting the affected families and injured students. University officials confirmed that the campus remained under lockdown for several hours following the shooting.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said authorities would later review campus security measures after confirming that exterior doors to the building were unlocked at the time due to exams. He added that there is currently no indication of an ongoing threat to the broader community.
This marks the first school shooting in Rhode Island since at least 2008. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue efforts to locate and apprehend the suspect.
