The Multipolarization of the United States Amid the Election of “Mamdani” and the Effects of Washington’s Policies

An expert on U.S. affairs believes that Mamdani’s election as New York City mayor indicates a fragmentation and disorder within U.S. political power.

According to Rokna, Zehran Mamdani defeated his independent and Republican opponents to win a majority vote as New York City mayor. A Muslim and Shia, he is now the youngest mayor of New York in more than a century and the first Muslim leader of the city.

Given that the new mayor directly addressed U.S. President Donald Trump in a sharp tone during his victory speech, Trump responded to Mamdani’s initial remarks, stating: “I think he should treat me very well. You know, I’m the one who has to approve many of the things that reach him, so he started off badly… I think he should contact us. Really. I think he should contact us. I’m here. We’ll see what happens, but I think it would be more appropriate for him to contact us.”

Trump further stated: “Mamdani must show more respect toward Washington, otherwise he will have no chance of success. Mamdani’s speech was filled with anger toward me, and I think he should be kinder to me. I want the new mayor of New York to perform well because I love this city.”

Mamdani’s victory reflects a process within the United States indicative of multipolarization and disorder in power.

Ali Bigdeli, a U.S. affairs expert, told Rokna in his analysis of Zehran Mamdani’s election as New York mayor that the victory reflects an ongoing process of power fragmentation and disorder within the United States, largely stemming from public dissatisfaction with rising costs of living.

He emphasized that Trump’s attachment to American values and his contradictory policies have left young people and immigrants confused and unsettled, driving them toward the more radical wings of the Democratic Party.

The university professor also noted that the prolonged federal government shutdown and Trump’s unwavering support for capitalists—based on the belief that supporting and encouraging investors leads to tax payments and increased employment—have influenced these developments. Trump has traveled to the Middle East and East Asia, urging investment from other countries.

Bigdeli added that Mamdani’s victory in the New York mayoral election is a response to Washington’s policies and the multipolarization within American society. He warned that similar outcomes could occur in cities like Chicago and California, where Democrats may assume mayoral or executive leadership positions.

He further stated that Mamdani must remain vigilant regarding Republican extremism, particularly from figures such as Donald Trump, noting that the 40-day federal government shutdown—rare in U.S. history—would not have been favorable for the Trump administration. These recent developments and Mamdani’s victory are the product of internal U.S. processes, particularly affecting wage earners who have lost jobs and contributed to the economic crisis.

Bigdeli concluded that Mamdani’s victory reflects the influence of immigrant and young voter groups and may help curb extremism. However, given the aggressive nature of the Republican Party, he must carefully navigate the political landscape and remain alert to Republican radicalism, especially from figures like Donald Trump.
