Possible Expansion of the European Union by 2030

The European Commission has announced that the accession of new member states to the European Union by 2030 is a “realistic” objective.

According to Rokna, citing Reuters, the European Commission said on Tuesday that the EU could admit new members by 2030. In its report, the Commission praised Montenegro, Albania, Ukraine, and Moldova for their progress in implementing the necessary reforms for membership.

At the same time, the European Commission accused Serbia of moving slowly in its reform process and warned of “serious democratic backsliding” in Georgia, noting that the country remains only a candidate “in name.”

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, reiterated during the Brussels briefing: “The enlargement of the Union is in our interest. Accession to the European Union is a fair, demanding, and merit-based process, but now the accession of new countries by 2030 appears to be a realistic goal.”

According to EU officials, Montenegro, Albania, and Ukraine are seen as the most serious candidates for accession.

However, the Commission’s report also noted that Ukraine must still make further progress on the rule of law and address concerns regarding political interference in anti-corruption institutions.
