Hungary’s Orban Opposes EU Expansion, Warns Against Undermining National Governments
Rokna Political Desk: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban reiterated his opposition to Ukraine’s potential accession to the European Union, warning that Brussels seeks to weaken national governments and replace them with administrations aligned with EU policies.

In an interview published Saturday evening, Orban emphasized Hungary’s right to oppose further EU enlargement. He stated: “I once again express my opposition to Ukraine joining the European Union, and Hungary has the right to resist the further expansion of the EU.”
Orban stressed that he is unwilling to share a political union with Ukraine. Instead, he proposed a strategic agreement between Ukraine and the EU that would prevent full membership while supporting Kyiv’s government operations. “From a strategic perspective, it is preferable for us if Ukraine remains a buffer between Hungary and Russia,” he added.
The Hungarian leader also warned against what he perceives as Brussels’ increasing efforts to override national governments, including Hungary’s own administration. “The objective is not merely policy change, but the installation of entirely new governments aligned with the European Union,” Orban said.
He referred to Hungary’s opposition party, TISZA, as a “Brussels project,” alleging that its aim is to undermine Hungary’s sovereignty from within.
Orban also highlighted his longstanding relationship with former U.S. President Donald Trump, noting, “There is a shared pragmatic worldview and mutual understanding between us. On matters of personal relations in international politics, there exists a sense of connection.”
