Brit woman who faced execution for killing abusive husband will be free in weeks

A British woman jailed in Malaysia for killing her abusive husband is “thrilled to bits” after being told she will be free in weeks.

Samantha Jones, 55, is behind bars for stabbing her husband in the chest after a drunken row.

But she has been told she will now be released on February 18th, but warned she faces weeks in quarantine.

The former insurance clerk from Somerset stabbed her husband of 17 years in October 2018, after he returned to their villa on the dream island of Langkawi drunk.

Her lawyer says she had been the victim of years of domestic violence and she stabbed him after he became abusive.

John Jones, 63, had been out all day boozing with fellow ex-pats, she said.

The retired fire service boss suffered a fatal stab wound to his chest, which pierced his liver.

Originally Samantha faced the death penalty and said on the eve of her trial: “I want everyone to know I loved that man”.

But she wept when she escaped death and was instead found guilty of 'culpable homicide', which is murder without intent and was jailed for 42 months.

As she has been in prison since stabbing her husband in October 2018 the authorities say she is now clear for release having served 28 months behind bars.

She has been warned she could still face weeks of quarantine, a period at an immigration centre before being deported back to the UK.

The authorities are also waiting to hear back from the UK officials about the procedure when she is flown back.

Her family have been told they will need to find the funds to pay for her flights and accommodation.

Samantha and John met at a fire service bash in Somerset when dad-of-two John, was married.

John ended up leaving his wife and children to move in with Sam and the pair moved abroad for a fresh start.

But their dream life soon turned into a nightmare as their relationship descended into drunken violence.

Her friends provided statements to the court to say she was a victim too and had suffered numerous beatings at his hands.

Her solicitor, Sangeet Kaur Deo, a respected human rights lawyer, previously told The Mirror: “He came home completely drunk, and she feared for her safety. There was a struggle and he was being violent.

“The one thing she wants everyone to know is she really loved this man.

“He had a lot of problems and she was standing by him and working it through.

“She never imagined anything like this could ever happen.

"She’s lost her husband and home. She is still grieving, it has been a traumatic experience."

Sangeet claims her client feared John would kill her one day and had suffered a broken jaw in one of his drunken rages.

But she was unable to call local police as domestic violence is “taboo” in Malaysia.

Instead, she claims, her client put up with regular beatings until her husband was killed.

The lawyer said: “He came home completely drunk... he punched her all over.

It’s unclear what happened next.”

She claims witnesses say Samantha was “living in hell in paradise”.

Eddie Higgs, 60, now living in Wales was friends with the Jones’s in Langkawi.

He said previously: “Sam turned up at our house a couple of times in a mess...we had to sweep her hair up off the floor because it had come out in clumps.

“I always thought she’d be the one who ended up dead.”

Samanta has been locked up in Pokok Sena women's prison in Kedah.

Her solicitor has told how she was living in fear of getting coronavirus.
