Gorgan Bay on the Verge of Environmental Suffocation! + Video
Rokna Social Desk: As water recession in Bandar Torkaman and the halt of dredging operations in Gorgan Bay have sounded the alarm for a “desertification in the sea,” an environmental activist, warning of an imminent dust-storm crisis, has called on the President and officials of Golestan Province to act before Gorgan Bay turns into a new epicenter of disaster.
According to Rokna, following rising concerns over the expansion of dust storms and the continued drying trend along the coasts of Bandar Torkaman, an environmental activist from Golestan Province, by publishing a message addressed to the President, called for urgent attention to the conditions of Gorgan Bay and the resumption of dredging operations.
He noted that Golestan Province is on the brink of confronting dust-storm phenomena, emphasizing: “If immediate action is not taken, the province will be counted among areas exposed to new environmental crises.” According to him, the halt of dredging in Gorgan Bay—which has effectively ceased since 2024—has caused water recession in the Bandar Torkaman area and a severe decline in water depth in the region, such that measurements indicate depths of less than 50 to 60 centimeters.
The environmental activist warned that the continuation of current conditions could lead to “the birth of desert within the sea” and the formation of newly emerged dry land. He also criticized the negligence of certain groups claiming environmental advocacy, saying: “Those who in past years claimed to defend Ashuradeh Island have today remained indifferent to the serious threat of desiccation and destruction of the region’s ecosystem.”
Calling on the Governor of Golestan, the province’s parliamentary delegation, and responsible bodies to present an accurate report during the President’s visit, he emphasized: “The remedy must come before the event. If dredging around Ashuradeh Island and Gorgan Bay is not swiftly resumed, we will be facing an even broader environmental crisis.”
