The Fury of Hurricane Melissa: Jamaica Under Siege
Rokna Social Desk: Hurricane Melissa has devastated Jamaica, leaving widespread destruction, power outages, and rising casualties across the island.
According to Rojna, citing CNN, hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm with sustained winds reaching nearly 185 mph, struck Jamaica on October 28, 2025, causing catastrophic damage across the island. The storm made landfall in the southwestern region, bringing heavy rains, life-threatening floods, and powerful winds that destroyed homes and uprooted entire communities.
More than half a million residents lost electricity as infrastructure collapsed under the storm’s impact. Hospitals and emergency centers reported severe damage, and many roads and bridges remain blocked. In the hardest-hit areas, entire neighborhoods were submerged, forcing hundreds of families to move to higher ground.
At least seven people across the Caribbean—three of them in Jamaica—have died, with officials warning the death toll could rise as rescue teams reach isolated locations. Government leaders have described the disaster as one of the most devastating events in Jamaica’s recent history, stressing the urgent need for unity, relief, and long-term recovery.
Even as Hurricane Melissa moves away from the island, heavy rains continue to trigger landslides and flash floods. The government has declared a national emergency and called for international support to restore essential services and rebuild affected areas. For many Jamaicans, recovery will be a long process, but their resilience remains unbroken in the face of nature’s fury.
