Accoding to Rokna, a powerful earthquake struck the central Philippines, killing at least 69 people and leaving widespread devastation across coastal communities, according to local officials and emergency services.
The quake, which shook the island of Cebu on Tuesday, caused heavy damage in the coastal city of Bogo, where rescuers continued to search through collapsed buildings and rubble for survivors. Power outages and blocked roads have hampered relief efforts, with hospitals overwhelmed by casualties.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that the quake registered a magnitude of 7.6 and was felt across several provinces. Aftershocks were recorded, raising fears of further damage to already weakened structures.
Authorities confirmed that dozens of homes, public buildings, and churches were destroyed or severely damaged. Roads leading to northern Cebu were cut off by landslides, while telecommunications were disrupted in several areas.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called for urgent mobilization of national resources, directing the military and coast guard to assist in rescue and relief operations. He vowed swift support for affected communities and appealed for public calm amid continuing aftershocks.
International aid agencies have also expressed readiness to assist, noting that thousands have been displaced and will require emergency shelter, food, and medical support in the coming days.
The Philippines, located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. Tuesday’s disaster marks one of the deadliest quakes to hit the country in recent years.
