Rare Asiatic Cheetah Filmed in Touran National Park + Video

The Touran Biosphere Reserve in eastern Iran is considered the most important habitat worldwide for the critically endangered Asiatic cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus) and the Persian onager (Equus hemionus onager). Covering a vast area of protected zones, including Touran National Park and designated wildlife sanctuaries, the reserve is a key stronghold for Iran’s desert biodiversity.

The area was officially designated as protected in 1972 by Iran’s High Council for Environmental Protection, marking the beginning of formal conservation efforts in the region. Later recognized by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve, Touran plays a crucial role in wildlife preservation, ecological research, and the study of desert ecosystems.

Despite facing serious threats such as habitat degradation and water scarcity, Touran remains a vital part of Iran’s environmental heritage and one of the last strongholds for some of the rarest species on the planet.
