Strange Taliban Order: Anyone Who Does Not Perform 20 Rak‘ahs of Prayer Is Not Allowed to Leave the Mosque
Rokna Political Desk: Taliban officials from the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice entered Bilal Mosque in Phase One of the Arya Township in Kabul and compelled worshippers to perform 20 rak‘ahs of Taraweeh prayers.
According to Rokna, the officials threatened worshippers that anyone who left the mosque before completing the 20 rak‘ahs would be arrested.
According to the same report, the officials entered the women’s section of the mosque and forced the women present to leave.
In Sunni jurisprudence, Taraweeh prayer is considered recommended (mustahabb), but recently Saudi Arabia reduced the 20 rak‘ahs to 10 rak‘ahs. Those present at Bilal Mosque in Kabul stated that the officials themselves did not perform the Taraweeh prayers, yet compelled the people to do so.
