Netanyahu Agrees to Second Phase of Gaza Ceasefire; Details of New Agreement

Axios, citing two senior U.S. officials, reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a meeting with Donald Trump, agreed to move toward the second phase of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.

According to Rokna, Axios cited the two senior U.S. officials as saying that Netanyahu has agreed to implement the second phase of the agreement aimed at resolving the situation in Gaza.

The two senior U.S. officials stated that Netanyahu, in his meeting with Trump, agreed to move toward the “second phase” of the Gaza ceasefire. Trump, in turn, committed that if Hamas does not adhere to the agreement and fails to begin the disarmament process, Israel would be allowed to take military action against the group.

According to one senior U.S. official, “Netanyahu was very pessimistic regarding Gaza during the meeting, but he gave us space to move forward to the second phase of the ceasefire.”

Trump is expected to announce in January the transition to the second phase, the formation of a “Gaza Peace Commission,” and the establishment of a new Palestinian technocratic government.

The first meeting of the Gaza Peace Commission, chaired by Trump, is scheduled for January 23 (Bahman 3), coinciding with the World Economic Forum in Davos.
