Are Iran and the United States Set to Hold Talks Mediated by Iraq?

According to Rokna, al-Sudani said: “We have now launched an important effort to arrange a bilateral meeting between Iran and the United States in Baghdad, with the aim of resuming dialogue.”

Stating that the matter was raised during a meeting with the U.S. special envoy, Thomas Barrack, he added: “We proposed to the American side that our constructive relations with Iran be used to resume the Tehran–Washington negotiations.”

According to him, both the American and Iranian sides are not opposed to the principle of dialogue, but “each has its own particular considerations.”

Al-Sudani emphasized that “Iran is seeking serious negotiations, without threats and without the imposition of conditions, and this perspective is logical and understandable.”

The Iraqi prime minister added: “The nature of our government’s work is that we act calmly, even if there is a great deal of noise and pressure against us.”
