Russia Gives Green Light to Ukraine’s Membership in the European Union

A British media outlet has claimed that Russia has agreed to Ukraine’s accession to the European Union as part of a final settlement.

According to Rokna, the Berlin negotiations, which were previously held between American and Ukrainian delegations with the aim of ending the war in the European country, are still ongoing, and various reports on the status of the talks have so far been published by the media.

On Monday evening, a U.S. official told Reuters: “Russian officials have stated that, as part of the final agreement, they are willing to accept Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. In addition, 90 percent of the issues between Russia and Ukraine have been resolved.”

Regarding the possibility of transferring certain Ukrainian territories to Russia, the U.S. official emphasized: “The final decision on territorial issues rests with Ukraine itself, and ultimately Ukrainians must decide on this matter.”

This comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously acknowledged in remarks: “We do not have the power or the support of our allies to reclaim Crimea and other territories under Russian control.”

The U.S. official further told Reuters: “U.S. President Donald Trump is focused on stopping Russia’s advance toward the West, and at the same time, we believe that Russian officials will accept security guarantees in the final agreement.”

He added: “Washington believes that Russia will ultimately agree to a guarantee similar to NATO’s Article 5, and President Trump is seeking to persuade Russia in this regard.”

Following Monday’s negotiations, Zelenskyy said in a post on the social media platform X that “a great deal of work is currently underway on the diplomatic track,” but he did not disclose further details.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow: “Russia’s demand that Ukraine not join NATO is a fundamental issue in the negotiations over a potential peace agreement. Russia is also expecting updated information from the United States following the talks in Berlin.”

Regarding future plans, the U.S. official told Reuters: “President Trump will speak tonight with President Zelenskyy and European leaders to discuss and consult on the Ukraine agreement.”

He added: “The issue of security guarantees for Ukraine was discussed today in greater depth and detail. We also conveyed Russia’s position on this matter to the Ukrainian team, just as we did during our meeting with the Russian team.”

The official emphasized: “Through an agreement to end the war, the issue of using frozen Russian assets for the reconstruction of Ukraine was addressed.”

Referring to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, he stated: “There are still disagreements between Russian and Ukrainian officials regarding the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. However, both Russia and Ukraine want to repair the plant and operate it properly.”
