Yak-38: A Cold War Fighter That Keeps History Alive
Rokna Political Desk: An image of the historic Yak-38 fighter jet, the Soviet Union’s first carrier-based VTOL aircraft, has become a symbolic memorial to the Cold War era and aviation history amid the freezing landscape of Murmansk.
The photo shows a Yakovlev Yak-38, also known by its NATO reporting name “Forger,” captured in the city of Murmansk, Russia (photographed in 2010). This fighter jet, a symbol of Soviet aviation history, has been placed as a memorial structure in front of a residential complex and was photographed as snow was falling.

The Yak-38 was the first and only operational carrier-based aircraft of the Soviet Union capable of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL), playing a significant role during the Cold War. The placement of this Soviet-era aircraft as a monument in the northern city of Murmansk serves as a reminder of the peak of the country’s military rivalry and aviation technological competition.
