U.S. Envoy: Time for Europe to Take Bold Action Against Russia

The U.S. representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) urged Europe to adopt a more aggressive stance against Moscow.

According to Rokna, Matthew Whitaker, in an interview with Bloomberg, called on European allies to take a “more offensive” approach toward Russia and stressed that the European Union must accelerate the use of frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine’s war effort.

He stated that such action could be a significant step in supporting Kyiv’s financial capacity and could push Europe toward a firmer policy toward Russia. “The time has come for Europe to show boldness,” Whitaker said.

The U.S. diplomat also praised European NATO members for fulfilling their commitments to increase defense budgets, highlighting Germany as an example of a leading ally.

Whitaker further warned that despite Russia’s military weaknesses, Europe must remain prepared, as the Kremlin is unpredictable and audacious, and action against NATO member states cannot be ruled out.

The U.S. representative to NATO noted that Washington seeks negotiations to reduce tensions in Ukraine while simultaneously maintaining sanctions against Russia.

According to Whitaker, despite legal obstacles and disagreements among members, the European Union must find a way to provide at least $104 billion for Ukraine in 2026–2027.
