Trial of Bashar al-Assad at the Center of Ahmad Al-Shara’s Focus

During his visit to the United States, President Ahmad Al-Shara told the American publication The Washington Post that the Syrian nation maintains its right to demand the prosecution of Bashar al-Assad.

According to Rokna, citing Al-Hadath, Ahmad Al-Shara commented on Bashar al-Assad, the deposed president who relocated to Russia after his ousting, stating: “We preserve our right as the Syrian nation to seek the trial of Bashar al-Assad, and the matter of Bashar al-Assad will pose challenges in relation to Russia.”

Al-Shara also said, “We have strategic interests with Russia and do not wish to push Russia toward alternative options in its engagement with Syria.”

The Syrian president further asserted in the interview: “We have expelled Iran and Hezbollah from Syria, and the country is now in a transitional phase.”

He added: “Those pursuing independence or autonomy are driven by personal interests. Fragmenting Syria or allowing uncontrolled military forces within the country would create an ideal environment for the resurgence of ISIS.”

Regarding an agreement with Israel, Ahmad Al-Shara stated: “We have come a long way toward reaching an agreement with Israel. Israel must withdraw to its borders prior to 8 December. President Trump also supports Syria’s perspective in negotiations with Israel.”
