Erdogan’s New Decision: Release of Al-Jolani’s Assets

According to Rokna, Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a decree lifting the asset freeze on Abu Muhammad al-Jolani (Ahmad al-Shar’a), the self-proclaimed president of Syria, and Anas Khattab, his Minister of Interior.

The text of the decree, published in the Official Gazette of Turkey, states that the decision was made based on updates released by the United Nations Security Council regarding sanctions lists related to counter-terrorism, as well as amendments concerning individuals who had previously been subject to asset freezes.

Turkey’s decision comes one day after the United States and the United Kingdom officially announced the removal of sanctions on al-Shar’a and Khattab following a vote by the UN Security Council on Thursday to delete their names from the UN sanctions lists. A draft resolution prepared by Washington received the support of 14 countries, while China abstained.

Meanwhile, an EU spokesperson stated on Saturday that the European Union would take similar steps, noting that the UN Security Council’s decision to lift sanctions against the Syrian self-proclaimed president and his Minister of Interior will directly influence actions the EU will adopt in the near future.
