Xi Gains the Upper Hand as China and U.S. Reach Fragile Trade Truce

According to Rokna, citing CNN, during a meeting lasting less than two hours at a South Korean airbase, Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump reached a temporary agreement aimed at easing trade tensions. China secured a 10% reduction in newly imposed U.S. tariffs and a suspension of Washington’s plan to expand its blacklist of Chinese companies. In return, Beijing agreed to increase its purchases of American agricultural products, including soybeans, and to cooperate in addressing its role in the U.S. fentanyl crisis.
Despite this agreement, tariffs on Chinese goods remain high, while Washington has made progress toward narrowing its trade deficit. Although the deal brings short-term stability, experts believe that deep-rooted structural differences between the two economic powers persist, leaving the future of their relationship dependent on upcoming political and economic developments.
