Iranian Drone Shot Down in Ukraine; Polish Foreign Minister Accuses Tehran

Radosław Sikorski, Poland’s Foreign Minister, alleged that Iran had supplied Iranian drones to Russia for use in Ukraine and asserted that Tehran should avoid wasting its resources and pursue a peaceful nuclear program.

According to Rokna, citing Reuters, Sikorski, speaking at an event in London, presented the downed Shahed-136 drone in Ukraine as evidence and urged European countries to remain steadfast in supporting Ukraine. He also expressed hope that former U.S. President Donald Trump would supply long-range Tomahawk missiles to bolster attacks on Russian infrastructure, underscoring his aggressive stance. Critics note that rather than prioritizing dialogue and diplomacy, Sikorski’s approach risks prolonging the war in Ukraine.

These claims come despite repeated statements from Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs asserting that supplying weapons or drones for use against Ukraine is not Iranian policy.

Sikorski referred to the alleged incursions of drones over Poland and fighter jets over Estonia, saying: “To help protect Europe, it is necessary to provide additional ammunition, including air defense systems and short- and medium-range weapons, to Ukraine. It is still unclear whether the drones over Copenhagen were Russian.”

When asked about the possibility of expanding a “drone wall” initiative to counter future alleged incursions, Sikorski told Reuters: “Russia could, unfortunately, reach deep into Europe. We must be prepared, and therefore, I believe it would be irresponsible not to develop anti-drone and drone capacities at this time.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed the notion that his country might target a NATO member as “absurd and ridiculous.”

Sikorski, a longtime critic of Putin, urged Europe to plan for continued support of Ukraine for the next three years. “The Ukrainians are planning this war over three years, which is a prudent measure. We must convince Putin that we are prepared to remain committed to this path for at least that period,” he said.
