Venezuela Thwarts Bomb Plot Against U.S. Embassy in Caracas

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro announced that his country’s security forces have foiled a terrorist bomb plot targeting the U.S. Embassy in Caracas; an operation intended to escalate tensions between the two countries.
Nicolás Maduro, President of Venezuela, said that security forces had thwarted a “false‑flag” operation planned by domestic terrorists to plant explosives at the U.S. Embassy in Caracas. According to France 24, Maduro said the operation was organized by internal terrorists to place explosive devices in the U.S. Embassy in Caracas with the aim of intensifying disputes between the two countries over drug‑trafficking issues.
Speaking on his weekly televised programme, Maduro said two sources — whom he did not name — believe that a domestic terrorist may have attempted to plant an explosive device inside the U.S. Embassy in Caracas in order to heighten tensions between Washington and Caracas.
Jorge Rodríguez, head of Venezuela’s delegation for negotiations with the United States, had earlier said that Caracas had warned Washington of a “serious threat” from extremists attempting to plant lethal explosives at the U.S. Embassy.
Rodríguez also said: “We have stepped up security measures at the diplomatic mission.”
It is worth noting that Caracas and Washington severed diplomatic relations in 2019, and the U.S. Embassy in Venezuela has remained largely abandoned, with only a few local staff who travel to and from the compound.
