Trump Welcomes Putin’s Proposal to Extend New START Nuclear Treaty
Rokna Political Desk: U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed support for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to extend the New START nuclear arms treaty by one year, calling the initiative a “good idea.” Trump described the Russian plan to maintain compliance with nuclear arsenal limits under the treaty for an additional year as a positive step.

Trump Responds to Putin’s Proposal
According to Rokna, Trump made the remarks Sunday evening in response to a question from TASS news agency regarding Putin’s suggestion. Trump stated: “I think it’s a good idea.”
On September 22, Putin told the Russian Security Council that Moscow is prepared to continue adhering to the treaty’s quantitative limits for one more year after its expiration in February. He emphasized, however, that this extension would only be feasible if the United States reciprocates.
Broader Security Comments
In his comments, Trump also mentioned a “second phase” in the fight against Venezuelan drug cartels and U.S.-designated terrorist organizations, declaring: “Drug trafficking will be stopped.” He did not provide specific details but added: “We’ll see how the second phase unfolds.”
The U.S. has previously criticized Venezuelan authorities for insufficient action against drug trafficking. The U.S. Navy has reportedly destroyed at least three fast boats in international Caribbean waters carrying 18 individuals accused of transporting narcotics from Venezuela. Trump reiterated in his speech at the 80th UN General Assembly on September 23 that the U.S. military would continue targeting vessels allegedly linked to Venezuelan drug cartels led by President Nicolás Maduro.
American media outlets have reported that the U.S. may begin strikes against drug cartel targets in Venezuela in the coming weeks.
