Rouhani: Iran’s handling of COVID-19 a model for containing contagious diseases

Speaking at a Saturday meeting of the National Task Force for Fighting the Coronavirus, Rouhani added Iran has implemented “very great and valuable” measures to control the COVID-19 pandemic over the past year, Tasnim News Agency reported.

He said Iran’s activities could function as a “roadmap for posterity, a source for the university courses and a model for fighting contagious diseases” that may break out in future.

The president called on people to keep observing the health protocols during the Norouz holidays (March 21-April 2), celebrated to mark the arrival of the new year in Iran, reminding that the country has not yet reached a stable and reliable state in terms of containing the spread of the virus.

Figures pertaining to Iran’s COVID-19 deaths and infections show that the overall situation in the country, except in one or two provinces, is satisfactory, Rouhani added, warning that a fourth wave of the pandemic may be triggered in case of laxity in observing the health protocols.

On Saturday, Iran’s Health Ministry announced 485 coronavirus patients have been admitted to hospitals across the country over the past 24 hours.

In a daily press conference, the Health Ministry’s spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said 485 of over 7,800 new coronavirus cases detected in the past 24 hours have been admitted to hospitals across the country.

She added the total number of people testing positive for the coronavirus in Iran has exceeded 1,739,000, noting that, at least 1,485,000 patients have so far either recovered from COVID-19 or been discharged from hospitals across the country.

Lari put the total death toll from COVID-19 in Iran at 61,142, saying the disease took the lives of 73 patients over the past 24 hours.

Among those currently undergoing treatment in the country’s medical centers, 3,836 coronavirus patients are in critical conditions, she said.

The number of people infected with COVID-19 across the world has surpassed 119 million, with the death toll exceeding 2.65 million.

Three homegrown vaccines are undergoing clinical trials in Iran. The country has imported several consignments of vaccine from Russia, China and India.
