Brent thug jailed for racially abusing and spitting at police while shouting 'corona'

A Brent man has been jailed after pleading guilty to two counts of assaulting an emergency worker and one count of racially abusing a police officer in Harlesden.

Samir Fouad, 18, was sentenced to 20 weeks in custody.

At the trial at Croydon Crown Court on Wednesday, February 17, the court heard how police were called to a fast food restaurant on High Street in Harlesden on July 3, 2020 following reports of criminal damage.

Police arrived to find the takeaway closed, with no sign of any damage.

A door to an upstairs flat was open and a man told officers that there had been a fight.

They were led to a room where Fouad was screaming in pain on a bed, pointing to his shoulder.

An ambulance was called, and officers tried to explain that they were getting help, but Fouad did not speak English.

Police described Fouad as being "very erratic" in his behaviour, getting up and walking across the room then attempting to jump from a window.

He was pulled away from the window and restrained on the bed by police. He then kicked out, shouting "Corona" before spitting at two of the officers.

He was then arrested and held in handcuffs.

Shortly before Fouad was put into the police van, he racially abused one of the officers, leading to the third charge against him.

Inspector Sammi Elfituri, based in Brent, said: "The officers called to the scene were simply trying to help Fouad after they found him injured.

"To be spat at and racially abused is completely unacceptable and it is right that he has received a custodial sentence.

"Spitting is despicable at any time, but it is even more reprehensible in the middle of a pandemic when officers, like the public, are working so hard to stop the spread of Coronavirus."
