Brit backpacker who died in 'selfie spot' fall had alcohol and drugs in her system

A Brit who fell to her death while trying to take a selfie in Australia had a cocktail of booze and drugs in her system, an inquest heard.

Makeup artist Madalyn Davis, 21, climbed over a fence at the Diamond Bay beauty spot in Dover Heights, near Sydney, to get the perfect sunrise picture.

However, she fell off the cliff and plummeted into the sea, with her body reportedly being found stuck in a rock shelf 55ft below the water's surface.

Ms Davis, from Lincoln, had MDMA, ketamine, cocaine and alcohol in her system when she fell to her death on January 11, Nottinghamshire Live reports.

Her inquest was held in Australia as well as the UK, which found she suffered from multiple injuries due to the fall.

Ms Davis, who studied at Retford Oaks Academy, in Nottinghamshire, had booked a 12-month travelling trip to Thailand and Australia with a friend when the tragedy occurred.

The inquest held at Nottingham's Council House on Monday, December 21, was told she had been consuming drugs and alcohol at a party before a group of eight decided to venture to the popular beauty spot to watch the sunrise.

Witness statements said the group climbed over a fence to access the site and then continued to walk down the side of the cliff.

Assistant coroner Gordon Clow said the substances she had taken would have "impaired her decision making, balance and coordination."

Senior police officers at the scene said witnesses who had been with Ms Davis described how they crossed "the wrong side of the barriers to take great photos."

The inquest heard how Ms Davis had walked on with three males before one shouted: "She has gone. She has fallen. She has gone."

Emergency services arrived at the scene at 6.32am followed by water rescue, divers, and local fishing boats which were called in to search for Ms Davis.

They found "a white flip flop on the cliff edge and many cans of beer" describing the fall as "extreme."

Her body was then discovered.

The inquest described the site as "a selfie hotspot", particularly popular with wedding couples, offering an "exceptional" view of the location.

Ms Davis's family previously said her death was 'the end of our world'.

They described her as "very healthy, liked eating out with friends" and was "very outgoing."

Her grandfather Arthur Davis told The Sun : "It is hell on earth for us. We are absolutely shattered.

"We are absolutely distraught, we are wrecked and her mum is not coping at all.

"She was a beautiful, delightful girl who had her whole life ahead of her."
